"Joseph Smith, of 234 Wilson Street, head weightman at thePennsylvania Steel Company's plant at the foot of Wilson Street, metwith injuries yesterday afternoon, which resulted in his death at theChester Hospital several hours later. From what can be ascertainedrelative to the details of the accident, it appears that Smith, whowas attending to his duties at the top of the blast furnance, startedto descend to the ground by means of the ladder, instead of waitingfor the elevator which is used in hoisting cars filled with slag tothe top of the furnace. As he reached a point near the center of theladder, Smith made a misstep and, losing his balance, fell backward. He plunged through the air and landed at the bottom of the shaft. Dr.J. L. Forwood, who happened to be in the vincinity of the plant, wassummoned, and after administering temporary treatment to theunconscious man, ordered his removal to the hospital, where he passedaway without regaining consciousness."
Description: Immaculate Heart Cemetery
Changed family name to Smith, Unknown date, in Chester,PA, after being injured while working at a blast furnace (smith). Thehospital couldn't understand how to spell his last name so hissupervisor said he was a Smith (meaning he worked as a smith). Forinsurance and I hear just "peace of mind" he had the name officiallychanged to Smith. Several of his children refused to change theirnames including my Grandmother, some changed their name back later.Came from Poland when that area was a part of Prussia.
